12. Accommodation on arrival

There is one more decision to be made, a fairly important one:

  • Do I rent an apartment on arrival to give myself time to find and buy a permanent home on site?
  • Or do I buy an apartment or even a house as soon as I arrive (or even before) so that I can quickly find a real home again and an investment at that?

Both have advantages and disadvantages. It can’t hurt to stay at the hotel for the first two days after arriving. This is a respite between jet lag and the excitement of the first few weeks.

If you want to rent, please note: rental agreements can have different conditions, such as a six-month advance payment, a minimum rental period, a ban on pets and – sometimes – no migrants! For example, French landlords will take out insurance to protect themselves against loss of rent – because they are not allowed to terminate the rental debt.
